Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Inclusion
at the
Federation of Snape Community and Thornton Watlass CE Primary Schools
Inspire ● Enrich ● Enjoy ● Succeed
At the Federation of Snape Community Primary School and Thornton Watlass CE Primary Schools, we are committed to ensuring that every child is valued, supported and enabled to thrive. We believe that all children have the right to access a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that meets their individual needs and helps them achieve their full potential.
We recognise that children may experience special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) at different points throughout their school journey. We are committed to working in partnership with pupils, parents and carers, staff and external agencies to ensure that appropriate support is provided and barriers to learning are identified and addressed as early as possible.
As inclusive schools, we strive to create a nurturing, supportive and welcoming environment where all children feel a sense of belonging and are encouraged to participate fully in school life.

What is SEND?
The Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice (2015) state that a child or young person has special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability that calls for special educational provision to be made for them.
A child has a learning difficulty or disability if they:
- Have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age; or
- Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.
Special educational provision is support that is additional to, or different from, that provided for most children of the same age.
Our Aims for SEND Provision
At the Federation of Snape Community & Thornton Watlass CE Primary Schools, we aim to:
- Ensure all pupils are included, valued and supported to achieve their best.
- Provide equitable access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum.
- Identify and respond to SEND as early as possible.
- Adopt a graduated approach to SEND support through the cycle of Assess, Plan, Do, Review.
- Work in close partnership with pupils, parents and carers, recognising them as key partners in their child's education.
- Ensure that pupils with SEND are actively involved in decisions about their learning and support.
- Provide high-quality teaching that is inclusive and responsive to individual needs.
- Deliver targeted interventions and specialist support where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records that support continuity and progression.
- Develop staff expertise through ongoing professional development and training.
- Work collaboratively with external agencies and specialist services to secure the best outcomes for pupils.
- Promote independence, confidence, wellbeing and successful preparation for the next stage of education.
SEND Information Report and North Yorkshire SEND Local Offer
All schools are required to publish a SEND Information Report that explains how they support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
This report complements the North Yorkshire SEND Local Offer, which provides information about services, support and provision available across the local area for children and young people with SEND and their families.
The Local Offer aims to:
- Provide clear, comprehensive and accessible information about available services and support.
- Explain how children, young people and families can access support.
- Improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND by ensuring services are responsive to local needs.
- Involve children, young people, parents, carers and service providers in the development and review of provision.
Further information can be found through the North Yorkshire SEND Local Offer.

Provision
All pupils in receipt of SEND provision have an Individual SEN Support Plan and pupils' progress is reviewed on a Plan, Do, Review cycle, six times throughout the academic year (two per term). The progress of our SEN pupils is also regularly monitored and updated by all staff, subject leaders, parents/carers and outside agencies when appropriate. When required, input can be requested from outside agencies such as Learning Support Service, Specialist Teaching Team (STT), Speech & Language therapists and other appropriate practitioners.
Teaching Assistants
Our teaching assistants are experienced and well qualified. They support the learning of the children both outside and within the classroom environment. Specialised programmes can also be delivered on 1:1 or a small group basis.
